James Hughes (James_Hughes@StorageTek.com)
Everyone
has heard stories of laptops or PCs being lost or stolen and wonders
whether it was the machine or the information that was lost. In
larger computer systems, there are new vulnerabilities of sniffing,
tampering or other active attacks to storage devices that have not
been possible before. This tutorial provides background on the emerging
area of "Encrypted Storage". It also addresses Existing Encryption
Algorithms and their Modes, File Encryption (e.g. PGP, GPG, etc.),
Volume Encryption, Existing Software Products, Open Source and OS
Issues, Existing Hardware Products, PC Encryption, Laptop Encryption,
Server Encryption, and Tape Encryption. We also highlight some of
the subtle mistakes that are/have been made. The tutorial concludes
with a summary of standards and future expectations.
