Botaro HIROSAKI (b-hirosaki@bu.jp.nec.com)

Today, the rapid increase of internet users and mobile users over the world are providing drastic changes of not only the individual life styles but also the enterprise management structures. Especially in Japan, with the wide penetration of broadband digital appliances such as digital cameras, digital TV's and high density DVD's, the internet and the mobile enrich their information handling functionalities as new generation service platforms. This presentation will first provide what is going on in the Japanese IT market as a melting-pot of broadband and mobile. More specifically it will give an overview of major changes of service provider business models in Japan, and will show newly emerging IP-base and/or mobile-base ubiquitous applications for various industry sectors.

By analyzing their economic feasibilities, this presentation will then focus on technological issues of network scalability, end to end QOS, connectivity of heterogeneous systems, and security for ubiquitous environments, all of which are key drivers to enable new business models to take off in the broadband and mobile societies. Finally the importance of business model revolution as well as technology innovation will be stressed by showing concrete examples of brand-new business models and up-to-date technology developments.
