Tutorial I

Title Semantic Web and Ontology
Duration
Half Day
Presenter's Name & Affiliation Dr. Adeeb GHONAIMY (Ain Shams University)
Brief Description This tutorial gives an overview of the Semantic Web which is an extension of the current World Wide Web. The current Web was designed for humans to read, not for computer programs to manipulate in a meaningful and automatic manner. Therefore, automated reasoning is the main objective of the Semantic Web.

Two important technologies for developing the Semantic Web are: eXtensible Markup language (XML) and the Resource Description Framework (RDF). XML lets everyone create their own tags and thus allows users to add arbitrary structure to their documents but says nothing about what the structures mean. Meaning is expressed by RDF, which encodes it in sets of triplets, each triplet being rather like the subject, verb, and object of an elementary sentence.

The third basic component of a Semantic Web, are collections of information called ontologies. An ontology is a document or file that formally defines the relations among terms.
